I think that there’s not enough talk about triggers that shouldn’t be warned for. There’s a bit of talk about not warning for body differences as “body horror” (that should be reserved for fictional depictions), but not about other triggers, and I think this is actually hampering intersectionality.

The main one I’m going to get into is being triggered by masculinity. This is a you problem. You can avoid men somewhat, but men (and people you think are men) will exist around you. Yes, this includes in public bathrooms. You need to learn how to deal with that (in ways that do not involve the police), and if you are so afraid of peeing in proximity to someone you perceive as a man you need to use exclusively single stall bathrooms. Public places are not your safe space.

Pulling this out of tags because this is the entire point of the post. You shouldn’t tag for an innate part of a person.

I’m ESPECIALLY feeling those tags. I was in a writing group briefly once and they had a rule about tagging talks of injuries or medical procedures which…. As someone with chronic pain issues I rapidly found out included talking about preventative stretching during writing sessions, acknowledging that you have chronic pain etc. It was deeply isolating to be told that your near-daily life and existence was something to be warned for, and rather exhausting. When I found out that one of my friends there got banned for talking about the themes of a particular broadway villain they found cool, I left.

YouTuber Footless Jo, a below-the-knee amputee, had an awful struggle with YouTube marking her videos as “for mature audiences only” because she… would show her residual limb on camera. Her videos were restricted and demonetized for showing “disturbing” content. If I remember correctly, that issue has since been resolved, but she has a great discussion about it.

Not exposing children to body differences does a lot of harm actually. Once at my summer camp, a little kid came up to me, so scared she was having trouble breathing. Once I calmed her down, she said she was freaked out by an amputee in the pool. Now, this was one of the sweetest kids at that camp. She didn’t mean to be rude. She listened when I reminded her that everyone looks different and that doesn’t make them scary. Exposing kids to this normalizes it, making it not scary for them and easier for disabled people to go out in public.

Arc: yeah, this sort of thing is a problem I encounter all the time in the fandom, only instead of physical differences, it’s people not having opportunities to discuss traumatic events with people who they would consider their peers.

With this ultimately leading to young people who were a victim of circumstance getting ostracized by people who would otherwise claim to support them, because they decided on the survivors behalf that never mentioning or dealing with the topics was better than the alternative.

Thinking that because many would rather be private with their trauma, that no one should be allowed the option to be public with it.

Even in clearly labeled spaces that deal with such topics that would ve better described as semi-public.

Instead saying such things should only be spoken about with a doctor.

Which a cursory analysis would quickly prove woefully inadequate.

As not only are such things prohibitively expensive and often hard to acsess in the first place, but you don’t live the majority of your life in a therapists office.

Tumblr has a lot of problems but seeing posts that say things along the lines of “being trans is so cool and sexy actually” over and over and over again made me genuinely believe it. Being trans is so cool. You are given the gift of life, and despite hateful backlash and the tremendous amount of work and bridges you will burn, you still would rather be your authentic self.
